A musing on apparel….

Reading through some other sports websites and forums (yes, others do exist!), I came across this little snippet:

http://www.bbl.org.uk/index.php?id=12&tx_ttnews[year]=2013&tx_ttnews[month]=04&tx_ttnews[tt_news]=978&cHash=4fde36fb84e82cf0bd36ee29901c5d49

Now this got me thinking. Presumably, the member clubs of the BBL are now going to get a better wholesale price for their kits, replicas etc as this is a ‘bulk deal’, as opposed to the prices they used to pay when negotiating their own deals. Which in turn may (should?) see the end price for the fan reduced.

Could this work for the EPL? Should it be pursued? personally, I think it should. The clubs should band together and ask for kit manufacturers such as Rhino to submit a tender to supply the league memebrs with kits, replicas etc for a fixed term of say, 5 years. If it works out cheaper than each club doing their own thing, then they should sign up to it, if not… well, nothing ventured, nothing gained.

And lets be honest, we’d all like to see something that reduced the price of our jerseys, right? You can easily spend the thick end of £250 on jerseys in a season, just on replicas alone.

Thoughts?

  1. At £50/60 for our jerseys puts me off buying a new shirt every season.

I don’t know the costings or profit margins for the shirts but I think, at say, £40 the club would generate a lot more sales.

    1. £40 certainly would be a more attractive price, but you are correct that it is down to the costings. As it stands, we just don’t sell enough jerseys to get the cost price down low enough to be able to sell them at £40.
